What Vaato Does

Vaato is a voice-first app that helps you capture your life story through daily questions. Your voice recordings are transcribed, translated, and woven into a bilingual memoir book for your family.

Information We Collect

• Voice recordings: Your spoken answers to daily questions. These are stored securely in Firebase Storage.
• Profile information: Name, birth year, and gender (used to personalize your book).
• Cover photo: An optional selfie you upload for the book cover.
• Device information: Anonymous device identifiers for authentication (Firebase Anonymous Auth).

How We Use Your Information

• Transcribe your voice recordings into text (via Sarvam AI and OpenAI Whisper).
• Generate personalized follow-up questions (via Anthropic Claude).
• Create your bilingual memoir book (via Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini).
• Generate watercolor illustrations for your book (via OpenAI).
• Send you daily reminders (push notifications, which you can disable).

Data Storage and Security

• All data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore and Cloud Storage) with encryption at rest.
• Voice recordings and book PDFs are stored in your family's private storage path.
• Book download links expire after 72 hours for security.
• We do not sell, share, or monetize your personal data or recordings.

Third-Party Services

We use the following services to process your data:

• Google Firebase (authentication, storage, hosting)
• Sarvam AI (speech-to-text transcription)
• OpenAI (fallback transcription, illustrations)
• Anthropic (AI question generation, narrative writing)
• Google Gemini (Gujarati translation and writing)

Each service processes data according to their own privacy policies. Your recordings and text are sent to these services solely for the purpose of creating your book. All third-party services we use provide industry-standard data protection, including encryption in transit and at rest, and do not use your data to train their models.

What data is sent to each service:

• Sarvam AI: Voice audio recordings for transcription into text. No personal identifiers are sent.
• Anthropic Claude: Transcribed text for generating questions, narratives, and English book chapters. No audio or account data is sent.
• Google Gemini: Transcribed text for Gujarati book chapters. No audio or account data is sent.
• OpenAI: Text descriptions for generating illustrations. No personal data, audio, or transcripts are sent.

All AI processing happens on our servers (Firebase Cloud Functions). The app on your device does not send data directly to any AI provider.

Data Retention

• Your recordings and book data are retained as long as your account is active.
• You can delete all your data directly from the app (Settings > Reset Progress), or by contacting us.
• Book PDF download links expire after 72 hours. The underlying files remain in storage until you request deletion.

Children's Privacy

Vaato is designed for adults (typically 30+ years old) to record their life stories. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Your Rights

• Access your data (visible in the app via "My Stories")
• Request deletion of all your data
• Opt out of push notifications via device settings
